Abstract:
This International Conference on "Early Warning Systems for the Reduction of Natural Disasters" gives the opportunity to meet together some of the specialists and technicians in this area and it will be important to know more about the experience in early warning of each country present. The purpose of this paper is to present some operational activities of the Portuguese Meteorological Institute related with severe weather warnings and how we intend to improve the Meteorological Watch. The first priority of any National Meteorological Service is to contribute to the protection of lives and property. So the most important task of this Services is to issue early weather warnings so that the resulting damages of the severe weather could be partly avoided.
