Improving the tropical cyclone warning system and its effective dissemination in the South-West Indian Ocean, Republic of Mauritius

Abstract:
In its founding resolution for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (UNGA Resolution 44/236 of 22 December (1989)) the UN identified hazards, including tropical cyclones, warnings as a major goal of the Decade. The South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) Basin is a breeding site for tropical cyclones and on the average 10 systems are observed annually. The countries in the SWIO are prone to its destructive effects and their economic setbacks, when affected, are colossal. An Indian Ocean Commission project, partially funded by the EU, has been implemented for improving tropical cyclone warning systems in the region.
The effectiveness of the warning systems have been scrutinised through a project financed through the Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Department of International Development. The presentation will deal with the above project and its implementation.
