Excursion B "Earth observation and data communication facilities of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in and around Berlin" Date: Departure: Return: Tour guide: The DLR field centre at Adlershof, Berlin, is located on historical grounds. At the beginning of this century, motorised aviation in Germany started off from the adjacent "Johannisthal Airport". The German Aircraft Research Facility was founded in 1912. Today, a modern technology and science park is arising in this area, which is where the DLR institutes for Planetary Exploration and Space Sensor Technology are also based. The tour visits these two sites where space missions for Earth and planetary observation are designed and where data is evaluated. The detection of hazardous wildfires is one of the foci of present sensor activities. The tour then leaves Berlin for Neustrelitz which is roughly 110 km away. Here, in the beautiful scenery of the Mecklenburg lake district, not far from the Baltic Sea, receiving stations for the most advanced earth observation satellites are concentrated. Due to its unique geographic position, which allows real-time data transmission from the North Cape to Northern Africa, Neustrelitz is the only licensed place in Europe to receive the 5.8 m resolution Indian Satellites IRS-1C and 1D, in addition to the Radar satellites ERS 1 and 2, as well as Russian platforms.
